Winter Wellness 2019
With the cold weather here, we would like to share with you some tips to keep you and your family healthy for the winter. First of all, it’s good to remember that getting an occasional illness keeps our immune systems strong and vital. For our children, it is especially important that their immune systems are exposed to viral illnesses never encountered before so that they can grow into healthy adults. For those of you who would like to better understand how our immune system works, pick up a copy of Vaccines, Autoimmunity, and the Changing Nature of Childhood Illness by Dr. Thomas Cowan, MD, a San Francisco physician and long-time friend of Pediatric Alternatives.
As always, we will begin with “Food as Medicine.” Nutrient dense foods, grown close to home, organic and non-GMO are the basics. We have well sourced homemade Chicken Bone Broth in our freezer made by Joey Anderson, local nutritionist and Secret Garden teacher. And for a little variety there is also Beef Broth by Osso Good based in San Rafael. For those of you who prefer to make your own stock see our broth Bone Broth Handout. For our vegetarians a good vegetable stock like Magic Mineral Broth with added Ghee or coconut oil provides excellent nutrition during the winter season. Check out The 7-Day Bone Broth Diet Plan and Cookbook by Meredith Cochran. Enjoy a yummy, nutritious recipe from the book .
Perhaps you never thought of “soup for breakfast” as a great way to start the day. We all know that kids love ramen. A simple way to turn any stock into a quick, tasty healthy option for the kids is to add a package of organic ramen.
Vitamin D is especially important but in the winter in northern California it’s very difficult to get Vitamin D from the sun so we recommend supplementation. From October to March we don’t get enough UVB rays to make any Vitamin D. Please talk to your doctor regarding the dosages for your family. Also, during these short days at the end of the year, it’s good to cut back on the activities and get more sleep.

The Danish Way of Parenting: What the Happiest People in the World Know About Raising Confident, Capable Kids by Jessica Joelle Alexander and Iben Sandahl
What makes Denmark the happiest country in the world--and how do Danish parents raise happy, confident, successful kids, year after year? This upbeat and practical book presents six essential principles, which spell out P-A-R-E-N-T:
This medicine is for adults and older children who can swallow a tablet. This product provides key immune nutrients Including a synergistic blend of the botanical extracts black elderberry, astragalus, echinacea and andrographis. This one is easy to carry in your purse of glove box and can be started at the first sign of a cold or flu.
Elderberry Syrup by Wise Woman Herbals - This very concentrated high quality elderberry syrup also has echinacea, vitamin C, zinc and osha for broad spectrum immune support. Dosage is 1/4 tsp 1-3 times/day.
Vitamin C - NutriBiotic Sodium Ascorbate powder. Gluten free • Made without GMOs
Vitamin C has several beneficial purposes including providing support to the body's immune system. At the first sign of a cold or flu mix some of this powder in juice or homemade lemonade and sip throughout the day. The dose to start with is 100 mg/pound. For example, a 20 pound child can take about 2000 mg/day (~ ½ tsp.) Vitamin C is non-toxic so you really can’t take too much. However, it will cause diarrhea if the dose is too high so if this happens just give less.
Recipe: Homemade Lemonade (or limeade) For each quart of water add ¼ cup fresh squeezed lemon or lime juice plus ⅛ cup grade B maple syrup (or your favorite sweetener). To this you can add the Sodium Ascorbate powder for a big boost of vitamin C.
NEW THIS YEAR: Sufficient-C - High Dose Lemon Peach Immune-Ade Drink Mix - This great tasting concentrated Vitamin D provides 4000 mg/two scoops. This is a better tasting alternative to Sodium Ascorbate Powder.
Immune Glycerite by Wise Woman Herbals
This is a mixture of herbs in a sweet glycerin base that supports a healthy respiratory tract and immune function. We love this product and have been using it for years. Taken to support the immune system when an illness is coming on or for a cough, this product works well for both children and adults.
In How to Raise an Adult, Julie Lythcott-Haims draws on research, on conversations with admissions officers, educators, and employers, and on her own insights as a mother and as a student dean to highlight the ways in which overparenting harms children, their stressed-out parents, and society at large. While empathizing with the parental hopes and, especially, fears that lead to overhelping, Lythcott-Haims offers practical alternative strategies that underline the importance of allowing children to make their own mistakes and develop the resilience, resourcefulness, and inner determination necessary for success.
Relevant to parents of toddlers as well as of twentysomethings--and of special value to parents of teens--this book is a rallying cry for those who wish to ensure that the next generation can take charge of their own lives with competence and confidence.
We have included four common homeopathic medicines used to treat influenza and common winter illness. Look at the descriptions below and find a medicine that matches your symptoms (or your child’s) most closely. You may take 3-5 pellets every hour or two. If you take 3-4 doses of the medicine and have no change or relief of symptoms, it is likely not the right remedy. The medicines do not necessarily make the flu disappear but will help the patient feel more comfortable. See our videos on homeopathy.
Aconitum 30C - This is often the first remedy given if there is anxiety that comes on suddenly and with great intensity. A sudden high fever, the first states of a cold from getting chilled. Restless, burning pains, palpitations, faintness. Laryngitis, sore throat, croupy cough. One or both cheeks red. Intense burning thirst for cold drinks.
Belladonna 30C - Influenza with rapid onset and high fever. Hot head and cold extremities. Face flushed and red, eyes glistening. Hands and feet are cold but the person feels very hot. Thirstless. Delirium.
Bryonia 30C - Indicated for slowly progressing influenza with body aches and worse from the slightest motion. Dry mouth and very thirsty. Headache with flu. Wants the windows open.
Gelsemium 30C - This is for influenza with marked weakness and sleepiness. Often a slow onset of fever. Chills running up and down the back. Thirst is minimal. Weakness and heaviness of the limbs, eyelids, and head. Eyelids droopy or half shut.
And what about some interesting winter reading?
Play is essential for development and well-being.
Authenticity fosters trust and an "inner compass."
Reframing helps kids cope with setbacks and look on the bright side.
Empathy allows us to act with kindness toward others.
No ultimatums means no power struggles, lines in the sand, or resentment.
Togetherness is a way to celebrate family time, on special occasions and every day. The Danes call this hygge--and it's a fun, cozy way to foster closeness. Preparing meals together, playing favorite games, and sharing other family traditions are all hygge. (Cell phones, bickering, and complaining are not!)

The efficacy of elderberry syrup has been proven in clinical trials to boost the immune system and fight influenza. It can be used for coughs, colds, flu, bacterial and viral infections and tonsillitis. People with the flu who took elderberry juice reported less severe symptoms and felt better much faster than those who did not. Take this good tasting syrup at a low dose all winter to prevent illness and increase the dose if an illness does occur. Dosing instructions are on the package for all ages.
Immunoberry by Designs for Health

It is recommended to take this at the onset of symptoms if there is a known exposure to a cold or flu, or it can be taken daily for children who get frequent illnesses. The mushrooms in this blend also combat fatigue and stress.
This homeopathic medicine by the Boiron relieves flu-like symptoms including body aches, headache, fever, chills and fatigue. Oscillococcinum should be taken as soon as first signs of the flu appear or when the person “feels” that they are coming down with the flu. Safe to give to adults and kids according to package details. Like all homeopathy, if it works, it’s like magic and if nothing happens it’s safe.
